All good things come to an end. The Stallions learnt this even before the 2009 season kicked off.
After going the past 2 seasons undefeated in the division a glut of graduations had left them with a threadbare squad with limited experience to go with it – thankfully a successful recruitment drive brought in many new faces and, with it, some very promising prospects.
The first half of the season was disappointing on the whole with defeats against Sheffield Hallam Warriors, Leeds Celtics and Derby Braves before Christmas left them 0-3.
The Christmas break spurred the side on though and the team secured their first victory of the year with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Leicester, with the Stallions defence able to shut down the high-scoring Longhorns offence and win with 2 Safeties.
Nottingham were next up on the cards and it was another hard-fought game on both sides of the ball but the small travelling Stallions contingent fell to another defeat at the hands of the Outlaws.
Liverpool Fury were the next team to take on the Stallions and a five-Touchdown performance meant the Staffordshire side brushed them aside with relative ease and notched up their second win of the season, albeit a slight more convincing this time round.
In the final game of the year the Stallions travelled to Loughborough on a Wednesday night and put in a credible performance, something which the final score didn’t reflect as Loughborough’s superior numerical advantage showed.
It was a performance that showed a lot of hearts from the relatively inexperienced side and they will be hoping to start the 2010 season in a much better fashion and push on from what has been a rebuilding year for the once-College Bowl finalists.
