HISTORY 2006-2007
The Staffordshire Stallions season was marked by whelming victories and searing defeats, which ultimately led to their elimination from the 2007 BCAFL Play-Offs.

They enjoyed a very successful first half of the season that put the team in pole position for a playoff spot at the end of the regular season. Ben Rowan had led them to a record of 3-1, a fate that no one had seen the Stallions of achieving in their first season as part of the South.

The Stallions going into Christmas were right on the heels of Divisional rivals Birmingham Lions, who were 4-1 and top of the South-Central.

Nevertheless, the Stallions failed to pick up from where they left off in 2006. In 2007 they lost to both Cardiff and Birmingham, drew to Derby by declaration and unconvincingly beat former rivals Sheffield Hallam Warriors.

In the end, it came down to the first game and final game of the season. Stallions needed to beat Birmingham to guarantee play off football, but a loss would all but end their hopes of playing in the post season.

Staffordshire narrowly lost to Birmingham (20-14) in what could be seen as the teams' best performance of the season. With themselves and Brighton both 4-3-1 the tie break came down to common opponents. This time Stallions opening weekend opponents Oxford was the key.

No one connected to the Stallions organisation thought that the game in week 1 would have such a big outcome ten weeks down the line, but it gives everyone the harsh reminder that every second of every game counts.

Staffordshire never got into the game. Offensive mistakes often stopped drives as Running Back Martin Tranter fumbled several times and with the Defence tiring Oxford score three touchdowns in five fourth quarter minutes shell shocking the Stallions.

Brighton narrowly beat Oxford 12-7 the following week.

This meant Brighton took the eighth and final spot in the Southern Play Offs, meaning Staffordshire had to face Aberystwyth in the Plate competition.

Along the way, many individuals enjoyed a successful season. Ben Rowan got his first career win as starting Quarterback against Aberystwyth in week 3, Richard Walker was the outstanding receiver who got his first touchdown reception in the 24-6 victory over the Warwick Wolves and Martin Tranter continued to be a key in the Staffordshire Offence.

Rookies James Walker, Nick Pryce and Peter Crawley made an impact at Wide Receiver, Kicker and Linebacker respectively. Whilst returning players Graham Roberts, Peter Buckley and Rob Pickerill showed their leadership by continuing to make big plays on both sides of the ball.

The Stallions were also strengthen by the return of Chris Ward who was apart of the College Bowl XVIII team. His presence as part of the team was crucial in the campaign as Ward played at both Defensive End and Tight End throughout the season.

As the 2006-2007 season approached the team spirit needed to be high. Off season developments had already seen many BCAFL teams and observers to British American Football write the Staffordshire Stallions off.

After clinching the Northern Western division the season prior, the Stallions were expecting to defend the title against divisional rivals Sheffield Sabres, Sheffield Hallam Warriors and Lancaster Bombers. However that was not the case.

Instead of defending the title, the Stallions changed Conference as well as division bemusing many.

What lied ahead was going to be a difficult season. Birmingham, Oxford, Warwick and Aberystwyth were divisional opponents in the Southern Central, and the Stallion also had to battle against former foes Sheffield Hallam Warriors and Derby Braves, as well as face Cardiff.

The upcoming 10 weeks were going to be a challenge, something that Staffordshire would never back down from.
